Travis Etienne Dynasty Fantasy Football Value: A Prime Trade Target

Sam Wallace analyzes the dynasty fantasy football value for Travis Etienne now that he's joined the New Orleans Saints for the 2026 season.

Published Updated

After spending his first five seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Travis Etienne joined the New Orleans Saints this offseason on a four-year/$48 million contract that included $28 million guaranteed.

The presumptive RB1 of his new backfield, all eyes were waiting on what was going to happen with longtime star Alvin Kamara. Well, as of July 15 we got some clarity on that front. It sounds like Kamara reworked his contract to stay with the Saints, likely ensuring he'll take more of a 1B/No. 2 role behind Etienne.

So, what does all of this mean for Etienne and his trade value in dynasty fantasy football leagues?

The Saints are one of the more intriguing, dare I say sleeper, teams heading into the 2026 season. I've written plenty on Tyler Shough and how he has the potential to take a big step this year as both the QB for the Saints and as a viable asset for dynasty managers.

Over his final eight games last season, he averaged nearly 23 points per game. His underlying metrics are strong as well. Shough averaged 2.0 designed rush attempts, 1.9 scrambles and nearly 20 rushing yards per game. Those are more than serviceable numbers for a first-year QB whose only legit weapon was Chris Olave.

New Orleans also offers a fantasy-friendly environment that Shough should thrive in. In 2025, led by first-year HC and rising offensive mind Kellen Moore, the Saints ran no-huddle 22.7% of the time, trailing only the Washington Commanders. They also averaged a league-leading 2.2 plays per minute.

Fast forward to this season and the Saints have added both Etienne and Jordyn Tyson. Along with the aforementioned Olave, this team has horses on offense to make a run at the NFC South title and a playoff berth.

Specific to Etienne, he's played in 17 games in three of his last four seasons and still managed to appear in 15 games in that fourth season. Aside from a lost rookie season, he's been remarkably durable. In those three full seasons, he averaged:

  • 249 rushing attempts
  • 1,080 rushing yards
  • 10 total TDs

Those are elite numbers for a running back who also happens to be an exceptional pass catcher out of the backfield. Still just 27 years old, Etienne should have every opportunity to lead his new backfield in every statistical category. In fact, our fantasy football projections give him the easy lead over Kamara in rushing attempts (235-92) and a slight edge in both targets (48-44) and receptions (38-34).

Certainly by way of the boxscore, but even via the eye test, it was easy to see Kamara has lost a step since his magical eight-year run that saw him finish as an RB1 seven times. This backfield is actually set up nicely to complement both players and, from a fan perspective, I'm happy to see Kamara willing to rework his contract to remain with the Saints.

For you, my fellow dynasty managers, Etienne is a prime example of an RB you should be looking to trade for if your team is within a two-year window of pushing for a fantasy football championship. As mentioned, he possesses that coveted blend of both rushing and receiving upside and his skill set should mesh very well with this offense.

If you have Etienne but are more in a rebuilding stage, I would be looking to trade him away for future draft capital and/or younger assets with a longer runway in front of them. Since we are in a bit of a lull during this period of the offseason, I might actually consider holding Etienne until the season starts. Once he rips off a few top-12 weeks, he'll naturally have more value for managers who need to bolster their own RB room.

Etienne is an exciting, dynamic player who has the opportunity to play a key role for a revamped Saints offense. He has every opportunity to do the very same for your dynasty fantasy football season this fall.
